The Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum on the 18th of June 2019 launched an Anti-Impunity Study.
Speaking at the launch, Trevor Simbanegavi, a victim of police brutality, who was represented by the Public Interest Unit of the Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum told of how he the police shot him at least 8 times on his leg on allegations of vehicle robbery. He was never officially charged of any offence.
He narrated how he was initially refused medical treatment and later was placed under 24 hour armed police guard.
The hospital demanded some USD1, 900 for urgent surgery which was only paid by relatives, friends and wellwishers. The state never took responsibility. He was eventually amputated.
Trevor, who was then a 21 year old university student told of how his parents had to sell assets to ensure he got medical attention.
The court ordered the police to compensate Trevor who only received the compensation some 6 years only.
